Bird in Hand

In 1997, Andrew Nugent planted vineyards and an olive grove on 100 acres on Bird in Hand Road, Woodside. The road itself was named after the "Bird in Hand" gold mine that operated in the district in the 1850s.

Four hundred metres above sea level, the vineyards face north and boast deep, well drained red earth, formed from metamorphic rock.

To extend the winemaking range available to Bird in Hand, another vineyard in the famous wine-growing region of Clare has been aquired to provide fruit for world class Riesling and Shiraz.

Blue Pyrenees

Blue Pyrenees was established in North West Victoria in 1963 by Remy Martin. Remy Martin was committed to discovering the superb sparkling wine potential of the world’s cool climate wine regions and in fact subsequently became the force behind Champagne Houses Krug and Charles Heidsieck. Blue Pyrenees is now 100% Australian owned.

Branson Coach House

Together with other investors Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, of Two Hands Wines, own and operate Branson Coach House. They purchased the winery and vineyard in 2001 with the sole aim of creating and establishing one of Australia’s greatest estate grown and made wines.

This vision has driven the development of Branson and is the reason behind the brand’s considerable success to date. Since its debut under the current ownership, with the release of the 2002 vintage, Branson has received outstanding critical acclaim. The wines possess all the elements of a great estate; power, intensity and the ability to age over the long term.

De Beaurepaire

The winery grows cool-climate grapes and aim to produce wines of elegance and finesse – in style between French and Australian. We select the best parts of our grape crop to convert into our own wines (over 90% of our grapes are sold to one of Australia’s best known wine producers). One of Australia’s leading independent wine-makers, with experience in both Australian and French styles, selects the grapes and makes wines to meet our objectives. We have recently added one of the best-regarded young vineyard managers from one of Australia’s premier cold-climate wine regions.

Fraser Gallop

Fraser Gallop Estate is all about producing the best wines possible from our wonderful location. It is 165 acres of undulating land set on Metricup Road, Wilyabrup, in the Margaret River region. Fifty acres are under vine.

They are a close neighbour to a number of iconic producers and have left no stone unturned in our endeavour to be ranked with the best of them.

Through minimal intervention and the use of traditional techniques, as well as the latest technology, they strive to create wines that show balance and finesse upon release and have the structure and pedigree to thrive with careful cellaring.

Glaetzer Wines

Colin and his winemaker son Ben have a shared philosophy. Both firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard. Their belief in “terroir” and an understanding of the ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district of the Barossa is evident. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines. With minimal intervention, Colin and Ben make the unique, elegant wines which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa Valley.

Glaymond

Glaymond wines encapsulate classic Barossa. Sourced from some of the oldest vines in the Barossa’s premier wine district, Seppeltsfied and Marananga, the philosophy behind this label is to capture the warmth, richness and varietal definition of the Barossa through innovative growing and winemaking techniques, delivering rich and powerful wines styled for longevity.

Hentley Farm

K1 by Geoff Hardy

In 1987 Geoff Hardy and his family began planting 30 hectares of vines with the aim of growing the highest quality grapes for producing super premium wines.

The site, named Kuitpo (‘ky-po’) Vineyard, is located along the ridge of the Southwest escarpment of the Mount Lofty Ranges, at a height of between 300 - 350 meters above sea level.

The combination of this altitude, climate and ancient soils has made this site ideal for a premium cool climate vineyard.
As this vineyard is the first significant planting in the Kuitpo region, most people refer to it now as the ‘K1’ vineyard.

Kangarilla Road

Kangarilla Road Vineyard & Winery is based in McLaren Vale South Australia. It was established by Helen and Kevin O'Brien in 1997. Kangarilla Road is the main road running past the vineyard towards the small village of Kangarilla, the name a derivation of the Australian Aboriginal language and refers to the abundance of resources locally.

McLaren Vale is for us the best region in Australia to achieve the wine styles that we want to produce. This vineyard and winery - which was originally established back in 1975 - offers us 30 acres of mature vines that contribute rich fruit characters so typical of McLaren Vale.

Kevin O'Brien is an oenologist with 20 years experience in the wine industry. Helen O'Brien brings flair to Kangarilla Road and has extensive experience in the public relations, promotions and fashion industries

Kaesler Wines

Kaesler is a privately owned wine company that produces estate grown wines from vineyards as old as 1893. The Kaesler family were pioneers who settled in the Barossa Valley in the 1840’s. In 1891 they bought a parcel of land and in 1893 planted their first vines.

Today Kaesler wines are made from these ancient, dry grown vineyards, by the third owners of this magnificent property.

Magpie Estate

Magpie Estate is a joint venture, which began in 1993, with the English wine merchant Noel Young. Noel who is based in Cambridge, U.K. has a passion for the Rhone varieties that matches my own. Most of the wines are sold into the English market with smaller parcels kept for Australia. The grapes only partly come from Veritas vineyards and this allows me to buy from further a field. Noel also likes more new oak than you will find in Veritas wines. Noel visits Australia twice per year and together we taste the various parcels of wine and agree on final blends for bottling.

The Magpie expression changes from label to label and this is done to poke fun at wine pretension. The range can vary from vintage to vintage and the following wines have been made over the last few

McHenry Hohnen

Winemaking is handled by David, his daughter Freya and her partner, Ryan Walsh. The McH philosophy embraces minimal intervention winemaking, where each wine is a focussed expression of its variety, its growing season and its individual site.

Within the four vineyards, eighteen varieties are cultivated. These reflect the region's heritage with the Bordeaux varieties (semillon, sauvignon blanc, malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot).

We also acknowledge the Mediterranean climate of Margaret River with varieties associated with southern France and Spain (marsanne, roussanne, grenache, graciano, mataro, shiraz, tempranillo).

Add chardonnay, viognier, barbera, sangiovese and zinfandel and we have the foundations from which we select fruit for the McHenry Hohnen range of wines.

Mount Gisborne

Mount Gisborne Wines is dedicated to producing high quality, hand fashioned Burgundian style wines.

The owners, David and Mary Ell, under the tutelage of Master Winemaker Stuart Anderson have been producing quality wines since 1991. The property, on 75 acres is located in Waterson Road, South Gisborne, in the Macedon Ranges Viticultural Region, and is bordered by the Wombat State Forest anduces low volumes of fruit with a complexity of delicate flavours. The vin the Derrijewarrah Creek. This cool climate region prodtages of Chardonnay are barrel fermented in small French Oak. After primary fermentation, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are allowed to complete malolactic fermentation during the winter and spring months. This process allows the wine a slow and gentle maturation and presents a wine with a smooth integration of fruit, acid and tannins.

The wines Produced by Mount Gisborne are 100% Estate Grown and Bottled.

Murray's Beer

Murray’s Craft Brewing Co. is proudly 100% Australian owned. Our unconventional beers are lovingly handcrafted - and now bottled - at our brewery out the back of the legendary Pub With No Beer at Taylors Arm (population 50), on the Mid North Coast of NSW.

We brew the beers that we love to drink – interesting and adventurous beers that are big on flavour and aroma. Typically, Murray’s beers are atypical – they’re not true to style, and contain different ingredients that make them stand out from the rest. As you can probably tell, we could go on about this for hours . . .but enough philosophising!

Let your taste buds do the rest of the talking, and experience Murray’s handcrafted beers for yourself.

Nashwauk

Nashwauk is a new brand created by Kaesler Wines from its recently acquired McLaren Vale vineyard. Kaesler’s first wine made outside its Barossa Valley home maintains its winemakers’ criteria using estate grown fruit of predominantly old vine plantings.

The search to find the right vineyard took some time before a 20ha property on Neill Road in McLaren Vale, Seaview sub region was bought in 2005. The 2006 vintage release is Nashwauk’s market debut. Nashwauk wines are made in small quantities (volumes outlined on wine labels) and the brand will probably peak at about 5000 dozen a year.

Oddfellows

Oddfellows is the name of an award-winning South Australian winemaker that takes its name from a group of five unique individuals who decided to put their expertise, energy and investments into making premium wine.

Traditionally, Oddfellows are governed by the principles of practical wisdom. Combine this with natural talent, good instinct, passion and an uncompromising attitude and you have the Oddfellows from Langhorne Creek.

They have an eclectic skill set encompassing knowledge and experience of the land, winemaking, marketing, graphic design and business management. Each complements the other and when drawn together gives this group an edge for making great wine.

The basis of the partnership also forms the foundation for the distinctive Oddfellows branding, which features the fingerprints of its members, drawn in a circle. The brand symbolises the diversity of the group, yet as a ‘circle of one’ demonstrates the strength and unity gained from working together to achieve the same goal.

Pertaringa

Rochford Wines

At Rochford Wines we pride ourselves on the production of premium quality wines that express the true character of our vineyard sites. Winemaker David Creed produces high quality wines with fruit sourced from our vineyards, located in two of Victoria’s premium cool climate wine regions. Together, with the viticulturalist, David works to ensure that the vineyards in the Macedon Ranges and the Yarra Valley produce only the finest of grapes to be used in the making of our wines.

The story of Rochford Wines has its beginnings in the hamlet of Rochford, on the northern slopes of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. The 270-acre property with functional winery was purchased by the Konecsny family in 1998. Less than five years later, the Konecsny’s purchased a second winery, Eyton on Yarra, located in the Yarra Valley.

Shortly thereafter, this property was renamed Rochford Wines, in keeping with the brand already established with the original winery in Macedon. At the same time, the property was significantly redeveloped to improve the layout and design of the Cellar Door, Barrel Room, Observation Tower and Art Gallery. The existing amphitheatre was also extended to accommodate larger concerts and outdoor events.

Rolf Binder

Sidewood Estate

The grapes used for producing our wines came exclusively from our own vineyard, a 300 acre property at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. This is the first vintage that we have bottled, although the vines themselves are mature at 8 years old. All the grapes were hand picked from selected rows and we have produced 750 cases of each.

The wine was made by Darryl Catlin, chief wine maker for Shaw and Smith and was produced at their winery, about 1.5 miles from our vineyard. Both wines are very typical Adelaide Hill's cold climate wines. We were very lucky to get our fruit off the vine early in the heat wave that occurred at harvest this year and the entire vineyard suffered very little heat damage.

The Sauvignon Blanc exhibits the unique, assertive character of a cold climate wine. With its correct balance of fruit and acid, it was bottled early to lock in freshness producing a wine that is very crisp with a light acidity and pale straw in color. We are personally delighted with it. It’s an extremely well made Sauvignon Blanc, proven by the favourable sales so far in South Australia.

The Chardonnay is also a typical easy drinking, cold climate Chardonnay, good intensity, with a palate showing classic stone fruit characters, very light oak and dry with a nice clean finish. As Chardonnays in general seem to be in over supply we have priced the wine at what we feel to be a very competitive price for a boutique, expensively produced wine in the hope that we can generate some excitement in a more competitive variety. The recent medal we received at the Adelaide Wine Show is a strong endorsement for this remarkable first vintage.

Tapanappa Wines

Brian and Ann Croser began Petaluma in 1976, which is recognised as Australia’s leading exponent of terroir driven wines. Croser exactingly matched varieties to regions and meticulously managed the vines in Petaluma’s "distinguished site" vineyards in Clare, the Adelaide Hills and at Coonawarra for 27 years.

Croser pioneered the development of the Adelaide Hills viticultural region, planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and establishing the Petaluma winery in the Piccadilly Valley from 1978 and Shiraz and Viognier at Mt Barker from the early 90’s. In the mid 80’s the purchase and renovation of the historic Bridgewater Mill provided a home for Croser, the eponymous premium sparkling wine made from fruit from the Piccadilly Valley, first released in 1987.

The Croser family owns the original vineyard of the modern Adelaide Hills wine industry, the Tiers Vineyard, an Australian Chardonnay distinguished site now being progressively replanted on very close spacing with new Chardonnay clones on rootstocks.

Tscharke

The philosophy behind the Tscharke range is to produce wines which are stylistically distinctive, whilst reflecting the unique characteristics of the Barossa Valley, offering ripe but balanced fruit with excellent varietal definition and expression.

Tscharke is a premium, contemporary and innovative brand focusing on alternative varietals that offers approachable
fruit driven wine styles.

This premium and competitively priced brand is perfectly suited to the on premise market.

Two Hands Wines

Since the winery opened, Two Hands sucess has gone from strength to strength with numerous accolades defining the culture of the organisation. Two Hands Wines were listed in the Wine Spectator Top 100 for the last five years with two listings in the top 10, most recently the 2005 Bella's Garden Barossa Valley Shiraz at #5 and The Ares voted one of the 25 Benchmark Wines of Australia. Consistent 90+ reviews from Robert Parker Jnr's Wine Advocate, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, James Halliday's Wine Companion, Wine Spectator and the UK Decanter magazine is further testament to the company's ability to capture the terroir of each vineyard and carefully nurture the characteristics of each parcel.

Wills Domain

The Haunold Family has a wine making past that is steeped in 15th Century European history and tradition. In 1383, with the permission of the Grand Duke Albrecht 3rd, Ulrich (the first recorded Haunold winemaker) was presented with a vineyard and built his castle after being bestowed with Land and Titles for Viticultural Excellence. On this estate he developed a "brewery" for the production of wine and also offered game hunting and fishing until 1725. The ruins of the domain can still be viewed today at Falkenstein (40km from Vienna).

The tradition of Viticultural Excellence is upheld today by Wills Domain which is now producing wines from the South West corner of Australia. This new chapter in winemaking is reflected in our current vintage releases, dedicated to the future generations of our winemaking family.

Yarra Yarra

Yarra Yarra is a labour of love. From the beginning in 1977, the vision has been to make special wines, wines we wanted to drink and if others wanted to share the pleasure, that was a bonus.

Our focus has always been on producing the best possible wines regardless of cost, rather than on how many cases or what profit was made.

“Word got around that the wines of Yarra Yarra were of exceptional quality. Just how exceptional became apparent at a vertical tasting held in July 1999”.
James Halliday

Yarra Yarra is one of only four Yarra Valley vineyards to have a wine, The Yarra Yarra, our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, classified by Langton’s. Only 101 Australian wines are included in Langton’s Classification.

The outstanding quality of our wines is further reinforced by Jeremy Oliver selecting The Yarra Yarra twice in his top 10 wines in the past 5 years. In the same period, Philip Rich has chosen Yarra Yarra wines four times in his top 20 wines in The Australian Financial Review; The Yarra Yarra twice and the Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon and Syrah Viognier once.

Yarra Yering

After a lengthy search, Dr. Bailey Carrodus chose a site in the Yarra Valley which seemed to meet all the requirements – grey silty clay loam with bands of gravel for good drainage, on a north-facing slope high enough out of the valley to avoid late spring frosts. The site has fulfilled all expectations, producing a wide range of quality fruit, from Pinot Noir to Touriga Nacional for a fortified red wine. Most of the 12-hectare plot was planted in 1969 and the 1973 vintage was the first commercial wine produced in the valley since 1921.

The reputation of the valley in the 19th-early 20th centuries rested on Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and these were the main varieties planted, but it was essential to give Pinot Noir a go, and so a smallish area of that was in the first planting. These three grapes dominated the first three wines.

Gabriel Boudier

In 1874, when Gabriel Boudier founded the company that still bears his name, he could not have imagined the great success that his Crème de Cassis de Dijon would enjoy all over the world. Although blackcurrants had been cultivated since the 16th century for their medicinal properties, it was some 400 years later that they were to be used in a liqueur- and what a liqueur ! Its huge success created unprecedented growth in the cultivation of blackcurrants in the Dijon area. Crème de Cassis de Dijon was born. "Crème de Cassis de Dijon" quickly became Gabriel Boudier's speciality. The company built a reputation on the excellence of its products which were greatly enjoyed by connoisseurs. Competition after competition saw a growing collection of medals and other awards, a trend which continued unabated after the acquisition of the firm by Marcel Battault in 1936.

Today the company is managed by his descendants and Gabriel Boudier continues to develop whilst maintaining the values which saw its creation: Quality and expertise which enable the firm to export to 58 different countries world-wide.

Michel Lynch

The name of Chevalier Michel Lynch, a passionate winegrower, owner of the Bages estate and founder of the current Château Lynch-Bages is an integral part of the history of the great wines of Bordeaux. Michel Lynch was born in 1754 and devoted his life to improving the wines on his property, the Lynch-Bages estate. A knowledgeable winegrower, he was one of the main forces in the progress made in the wine sector at the end of the 18th century. He was responsible for the first trials of de-stemming (separating the stalk and the berries) before fermentation, a method that was to become widespread during the 19th century in the Médoc region.

A warm and committed man, he loved to share his passion and organised festivities for the locals at the end of each harvest.

His humanity and managerial talent enabled him to be elected easily to the position of Mayor of Pauillac and he fulfilled his role energetically throughout the French revolution.

By giving Michel Lynch’s name to his range of Bordeaux wines, Jean-Michel Cazes wanted to pay homage to this emblematic figure.

Mischief & Mayhem

Mischief and Mayhem is the creation of Michael Ragg and Michael Twelftree, two great friends whose passion for wine, and for Burgundy in particular, inspired them to team up and create the company in autumn 2004.

Michael Ragg spent nearly ten years working with leading UK fine wine merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd before moving to Burgundy in spring 2003 and setting up his own wine consultancy and broking business in Aloxe-Corton. He's Mischief. Michael Twelftree is co-founder and driving force behind top Australian winery Two Hands Wines in the Barossa Valley. He's Mayhem.

Living in Aloxe-Corton for nearly six years has given Ragg the opportunity to develop a lot of contacts on the ground in Burgundy and this is key to the business. Mischief and Mayhem source grapes from all over the Côte d'Or and Ragg's knowledge of the region's vineyards, along with Twelftree's knowledge of the world's emerging markets, combine together in a goal to produce outstanding wine, in a helpful way, that uncovers and de-mystifies this wonderful, yet often frustratingly complex region.

The possession of these vineyards dates from 1813 when one of the ancestors, by his personal courage, succeeded in preventing the plundering of Mülheim by Emperor Napoleon I.

MAX FERD.RICHTER supplies a large variety of single vineyard wines. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally fresh weathering grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay parts (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim); those make the character and flavour.

Castellare di Castellina

Gianni Gagliardo

The unique and unrepeatable style of a wine is originated by two elements: the vineyard and the people.

The Gianni Gagliardo vineyards are now situated in four villages: La Morra with Serra dei Turchi and Tuni vineyards where the winery itself is also located; Barolo, on prestigious sites such as Cannubi, Fossati and Le Liste; Monforte d’Alba, in particular in Castelletto and Conterni hills; and Serralunga d’Alba, in Parafada. As is only to be expected, the main grape-variety grown is Nebbiolo for Barolo, accompanied by Barbera and Dolcetto.

On the other side of the Tanaro River, in the Roero area Gianni Gagliardo’s vineyards in Monticello d’Alba are planted above-all with the white Favorita, alongside Nebbiolo - this time for Nebbiolo d’Alba - and Barbera.

The 2000 vintage marked the introduction in positions of responsibility of the new generation of the Gagliardo family: although Alberto and Stefano had already been working in the company over the previous years, their official baptism was to come with the 2000. This involved a gradual re-distribution of roles within a team that attaches great importance to recognizing the abilities of its various members.

So today Gianni Gagliardo besides covering the role of co-ordinator, concerns himself with communication and marketing. Stefano Gagliardo is responsible for the wines which he has remodeled and developed according to his expectations and style. Finally, Alberto Gagliardo “lords” it over the vineyards, where he has to manage the natural balance.

We believe the greatest significance of wine is about sharing a moment. A great wine, shared with moderation, helps people to take the mask off, and create new friendships. For this reason the falling mask is the symbol of our winery…

Their first vintage, which included the Gewürztraminer grown on the Alabama road vineyard, was just fifteen tonnes and was managed by Ross from the old tin shed on the property, which is still standing and forms part of the winery cellar door.
Their Gewürztraminer has gone on to be recognised as one of the country's finest and has firmly established Lawson's Dry Hills on the national and international wine stage.

Other plantings soon followed and the company now produce a benchmark range of Marlborough wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, as well as outstanding Gewürztraminer.

All the grapes for Lawson's Dry Hills are sourced from Marlborough's Wairau, Waihopai, Omaka and Brancott valleys.

Ross and Barbara have very simple company philosophy - "To produce Marlborough wines of great character at a fair price"

Lawson's Dry Hills has one other distinction, Ross believes that it was the first winery in the world to seal all it's 750ml bottles with a screwcap as a means of avoiding cork tainted wine.

PORTUGAL

Quinta Do Noval

Quinta do Noval lies in the Douro valley in Northern Portugal one of the few remaining places of wild and unspoilt beauty in Europe. The vineyards that produce the grapes for Port wine cling to steep hillsides in the winding valleys of the Douro River and its tributaries. Great Port has been produced in the heart of this region by Quinta do Noval since 1715. Owing to the tiny production, Nacional is only ever sold in very small quantities. Allocations of bottles are made each year to Noval’s distributors who then in their turn may allocate a bottle or two for sale to regular Noval customers. The occasional case of Nacional which reaches the open market sells for extremely high prices, reflecting the exceptional quality and the rarity of this, the most collectable port in the world.

Roquette E Cazes

XISTO - Roquette e Cazes is above all the result of a long friendship between Jorge Roquette of Quinta do Crasto and Jean-Michel Cazes of Château Lynch-Bages. In 2002 the two families decided to create a new company and to produce a great wine that would ally the natural and unique characteristics of the Douro to the Cazes family’s experience of one century making top Bordeaux wines.

SPAIN

Bodegas Altanza

Bodegas Altanza was established in 1998 in the heart of the Rioja Alta area in a town called Fuenmayor. Based on the Chinese Tao Te Ching philosophy and religion, "We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want". "We hammer wood for a house, but it is the inner space that makes it liveable”, Bodegas Altanza joins modernity and tradition that it is shown in the type of its wines that combine modern technologies and traditional wine making methods.

Bodegas Altanza elaborates only high quality red wine, mainly Reservas and Grandes Reservas using only one type of grape, Tempranillo.

Bodegas Marques de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta is an Estate winery in the purest sense, making wines only from grapes harvested from the 300 hectare Ygay Estate. In addition all the wines are bottled and matured at the Marqués de Murrieta cellar.
The key to the quality and style of Marqués de Murrieta wines lies in the unique 300 hectare estate, at the most southerly point of the Rioja Alta. A well drained soil, rich in mineral deposits, and with a surprising number of large stones, ensures grapes of a complexity rarely found in the region. In addition, the relatively hot summers at the Ygay estate ensures that wines are always made from ripe, healthy grapes.

The 300 hectares of prime vineyard which form the Ygay Estate, (and which make Ygay the largest single estate in La Rioja), means that our winemaker can control all the aspects of the yearly development of the vine. More importantly perhaps, it also allows him to choose the best moment to harvest, and to bring the grapes to the cellar within half an hour of being picked, thus receiving only healthy fruit with no oxidisation. Having to rely on one’s own grape source means that each vintage provides different challenges for the winemaker, but it also means that each vintage has its own personality.

The choice of grape varieties is crucial in all the wines we make. At Marqués de Murrieta we grow only indigenous varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo y Viura. And also an old vineyard of Cabernet-Sauvignon.
